A fall winter wardrobe refresh doesn’t mean buying a whole new closet. It means adding a handful of strategic pieces that make everything you already own look new again. That’s the rule I’ve followed for years, and this season I put it to work with a Fabrique edit: pearl-trimmed tweed, buttery suede, lived-in vegan leather and a pair of seriously good jeans.
I’ve learned that a closet holds two kinds of clothes. There are the ones you simply need: black leather boots for rainy days, a warm puffer, classic black trousers. And there are the ones that, the moment you put them on, freshen up everything around them. At 59, it’s the second kind I shop for, and it’s what I went looking for in my capsule wardrobe this season.
Below you’ll find my discount codes and a quick summary with every link. Then I’ll walk you through each piece, how I style it and the size I took.

The pieces you need vs. the pieces that refresh: why it matters
A “need” piece solves a practical problem. A strategic piece does something else entirely: it changes how everything next to it reads. A black turtleneck with a tiny ruffle makes the blazer you’ve owned for ten years look softer and more current. A brown suede bag warms up a grey coat that had started to feel flat.
So before I buy anything for a fall winter wardrobe refresh, I ask myself three questions. Can I wear it with at least five things I already own? Does it bring something my basics don’t have, like a texture, a color or a special detail? Will I still want it next year?
Three yeses, and it’s a strategic buy. It’s the same approach behind my fall winter capsule wardrobe: fewer pieces, far more outfits.
Why Fabrique (again)
This was my second Fabrique order, and once again I was thrilled with what arrived. Fabrique works as a designer collective with more than 300 international designers, many of them alumni of big fashion houses. Every product page tells you who designed the piece, and you can feel the tailoring the moment you try it on.
The other thing I love is the size charts. They’re specific to each garment, with real measurements, which matters when you shop online over 50 and your body no longer follows standard sizing. For the full lowdown on shipping, returns and quality, read my Fabrique review.
My strategic pieces for a fall winter wardrobe refresh
Here’s every piece, what sold me on it, how I wear it and the size I chose.
1. The Catherine tweed set with pearls: skirt and vest
This is the most special piece in my edit, and possibly my favorite. It’s two pieces by Paris-based designer Alex Rotin, who has worked with Fabrique since 2020: the Catherine black tweed straight skirt and the matching Catherine tweed vest.
The skirt has a clean, rigorous straight line, a back slit and a row of pearls along the hem. The same pearls trim the round neckline of the sleeveless vest. Fine metallic threads run through the tweed and catch the light, which is exactly what you want on short, grey December days.

The beauty of a set is that you don’t have to wear it together. As a pair it’s a ready-made outfit for dinners and the holidays. Split up, the pieces work even harder:
- the vest over a crisp white shirt or a long-sleeve knit, with jeans;
- the skirt with a black turtleneck and boots, or a cream sweater;
- the vest under an open blazer, instead of the usual tee.
Layering them over shirts and knits keeps them in rotation all through the coldest months. I took a size S in both.
2. The Aura suede hobo: my bag of the season
You know my weakness for bags. This year’s bag of the season is the Aura slouchy suede hobo, designed by Florence-based Valeria Massai, who has been with Fabrique since 2024.
It’s a medium hobo, smooth and understated, in velvety cowhide suede in a warm saddle brown. A tiny Fabrique logo is embossed on the front, barely visible. There’s almost no hardware, so it’s light and it truly goes with everything: coats, leather jackets, knitwear.
It’s practical, too. There’s a deep exterior pocket with a magnetic snap, a fully lined interior with one zip pocket and one open pocket, and you can wear it on the shoulder or in the crook of your arm. It holds its shape, yet slouches just enough, the way good suede does, and that’s what gives it such an elegant line.
The warm brown works with black, navy, denim (it looks fabulous with jeans) and the whole cream, ivory, ecru, taupe and camel family. One practical tip from the product page: suede can transfer a little color, so take care with very pale clothes at first.
Heads-up: as I write this, the Aura shows as sold out. I’m leaving the link because Fabrique often restocks, so keep an eye on it.
3. The Miriam vegan leather biker jacket in brown
Leather jackets come in every shape this season: bombers, oversized, cropped. I went for the line that never dates, the biker. The Miriam vegan leather jacket is a deep chocolate brown with a faded, vintage-wash finish I’ve loved since I was a teenager.
It has a fitted ’90s silhouette, Western yoke seams and an asymmetric zip. It hits right at the hip, which creates a great line even with wide trousers. It’s by Paris designer Romy Van Zuylen, whose résumé includes Courrèges and Balenciaga.
Why brown and not black? Brown adds softness without losing the biker’s edge. Black near the face can feel harsh, while brown is simply easier to style: with denim, a cashmere sweater, a white shirt, or over a little black dress at night to take it down a notch.
I wear it with my Monti East West bag in waxed leather, which has the same lived-in spirit. I took an XS.

The trio I reach for most
Jacket, jeans and turtleneck: together they’re an outfit, apart they refresh half of my closet.
4. The Glaire jeans by Adriano Goldschmied
When I saw that Adriano Goldschmied, the “godfather of denim” behind AG Jeans, designs for Fabrique, I had to try a pair from the master himself. I chose the Glaire straight wide-leg jeans in a light-wash lyocell denim.
They fit the way great jeans should: close at the waist and hips, then falling straight and wide. The result is that long, long leg we all want. The design nods to vintage workwear, with a horizontal coin pocket, a curved back yoke and paneled construction with a band at the hem.
A note on length: I’m 5’4″ (1.63 m) and took a regular S. They’re perfect with a 2.5-inch heel and a touch long with sneakers, so I’m still deciding whether to hem them. There’s also a petite version (XS/P and S/P), which was sold out in my size when I ordered. If you’re under 5’5″, check that first.
They go with everything: a white shirt, a tee, a sweatshirt, a chunky sweater, and under a winter coat they’re just perfect. For more denim ideas, see my fall winter jeans trends.
5. The Toranto cropped wide-leg trousers
This one was a bit out of character for me: I had nothing like it in my closet and I really wanted to try the shape. The Toranto cropped wide-leg trousers in a soft wool blend are by Paris designer Elena Peters, formerly of Nina Ricci.

The secret to wearing a culotte over 50 without looking bulky is the shoe. I pair them with suede boots that hug the calf, so the volume stays clean and the leg looks longer. The tailoring is beautiful: they sit well at the waist, follow the hips and, maybe because they’re black, I find them slimming.
I wear them with a white shirt under a black or cream coat, or a fitted black turtleneck to balance the volume. I took an S.
6. The Edith merino top in taupe
On to knitwear, starting with the Edith merino wool top in taupe, designed by Roderic Wong. Taupe is one of the shades in my Autumn color palette, and it’s effortlessly elegant.
It has an unusual diagonal neckline and adjustable gathers that run diagonally across the waist: they’re there to lengthen and define, not to add bulk. The knit is soft, light and stretchy, so it’s comfortable and wraps the body beautifully.
In fall I love it with browns, light or dark; with the Aura bag it’s a dream. Taupe also works with white, cream and black. It’s exactly what I look for: easy to wear, never boring. I took an M.
7. The Lieve ruffle-trim turtleneck
Every closet needs a black turtleneck. It breaks up any print and, with jeans and a blazer, it’s an instant outfit. I already own three or four, yet I still added the Lieve ruffle-trim turtleneck, because it has something extra.
The collar and cuffs are edged with a small ruffle in the same knit, a romantic touch that softens the classic turtleneck. It’s fitted, super soft, very stretchy and made in a fine wool blend that doesn’t itch. Wear it alone, under a shirt, under blazers, cardigans, coats and puffers: it does it all. I took an M.
A fitted turtleneck under a jacket is also one of my favorite ways to make a blazer work over 50.
8. Two more bags: the Monti and the Soft Rialto
The last two are Fabrique bags I already owned and that I wear constantly with these pieces. The Monti East West shoulder bag, by Rome-based Sophie Jousse, is in oiled, waxed full-grain leather in a deep burgundy, with a gold “bean” button and handles inspired by Roman columns. It measures 35 × 14 × 15 cm (13.8 × 5.5 × 5.9 in) and is a perfect match for the Miriam jacket.
The Soft Rialto double flap bag, also by Valeria Massai, is a softer, lighter take on the original Rialto, in black full-grain cowhide with a nappa finish, small size (28 × 9 × 18 cm). It’s the one you see with the Lieve turtleneck and jeans: polished but relaxed.
How to style them: 4 outfits for a fall winter wardrobe refresh
This is how I mix these pieces with each other and with the basics I already own:
- Everyday casual chic: Glaire jeans, Lieve turtleneck, the navy blazer you already have and the Aura suede bag.
- Edgy but soft: Miriam biker, Lieve turtleneck, Toranto trousers, slim boots and the Monti bag.
- Elegant lunch: Edith taupe top, white or cream trousers, beige ankle boots and the Aura bag, all tone on tone.
- Evening and holidays: the Catherine skirt and vest as a set, with the black Soft Rialto. If it’s cold, throw the biker on top: it dresses it down in the best way.

Fabrique sizing: how to get it right
I’m 5’4″ and took XS in the Miriam jacket, S in the skirt, vest, jeans and trousers, and M in both knits. A few tips:
- Use each garment’s own size chart. Fabrique’s measurements change from style to style, and the charts are very reliable.
- Read the “fit details”. They rate thickness, softness and stretch: the Toranto and the jeans have no stretch, the Lieve turtleneck has lots.
- Check the petite sizes. Many pieces come in XS/P and S/P, which can save you a trip to the tailor.

My final thoughts
For me, a fall winter wardrobe refresh means owning fewer pieces but choosing the right ones: pieces that create endless combinations and bring a sense of newness even when you’re wearing your old favorite basics, the ones that have been in your closet for ten years or more. This Fabrique edit does exactly that.

Choose three to five strategic pieces that work with at least five things you already own and add something your basics lack: a texture like tweed or suede, a color like taupe or warm brown, or a detail like a ruffle. Those pieces make the rest of your closet feel new.
A brown leather or vegan leather jacket, a black turtleneck with an interesting detail, a warm-toned suede bag, wide-leg jeans that fit well at the waist and one special piece such as a tweed skirt. They mix with each other and with the basics you already have.

Warm brown suede looks great with black, navy, denim and the whole cream, ivory, ecru, taupe and camel family. Be careful with very pale clothes the first few times you wear it, because suede can transfer a little color.
