Baumann Skin Type Quiz: I Took the Dermatologist Test at 59 — My Results and Recommended Routine

Beauty

The short version: The Baumann Skin Type Quiz is a free 3-minute test on skintypesolutions.com, developed by dermatologist Dr. Leslie Baumann, that identifies your skin type from 16 possible categories and recommends a personalised clinical routine.

My result at 59: DRNW — Dry, Resistant, Non-pigmented, Wrinkle-prone. The routine it prescribed is the most logical skincare approach I have followed in years, and several weeks in, my skin is noticeably different. Use code NOTIMEFORSTYLE10 for 10% off the recommended products.

Baumann Skin Type Quiz: I Took the Dermatologist Test at 59 — My Results and Recommended Routine

I have been interested in skincare seriously since my forties — not casually, not aspirationally, but with the kind of focus that comes from actually noticing what works and what does not on your own face. I have tried a lot, and I have wasted money on products that were not wrong exactly, just not right for my specific skin.

And I have spent more hours than I would like to admit reading ingredient lists, dermatologist recommendations, and beauty editor roundups trying to figure out what my skin actually needs at 59.

The problem is that most skincare advice — even good, dermatologist-sourced advice — is generic. “Use retinol.” “Add vitamin C.” “Prioritise SPF.” All true. None of it tells you which retinol, at what concentration, in what order, combined with what else, for your specific skin type. The gap between knowing the principles and building an actual routine has always felt wider than it should be.

The Baumann Skin Type system is the first approach I have found that addresses this gap directly.

What Is the Baumann Skin Type System?

Dr. Leslie Baumann MD is a Miami-based dermatologist and the author of The Skin Type Solution, a New York Times bestseller. Her system, developed over decades of clinical practice, classifies skin into 16 types based on four independent parameters:

Oily (O) vs. Dry (D) — how much sebum your skin produces Sensitive (S) vs. Resistant (R) — how your skin reacts to products and environment Pigmented (P) vs. Non-pigmented (N) — tendency toward dark spots and uneven tone Wrinkle-prone (W) vs. Tight (T) — tendency to develop fine lines and loss of firmness

Each skin type is a four-letter combination of these parameters. DRNW means Dry, Resistant, Non-pigmented, Wrinkle-prone. There are 16 possible combinations — OSPT, ORNT, DSPW, and so on — each with a distinct recommended routine built from clinical-grade products Dr. Baumann’s team has vetted specifically for that type.

The quiz itself is free, takes about 3 minutes, and lives at skintypesolutions.com. No email required.

Taking the Quiz — What to Expect

The questions are practical and specific — not “how does your skin feel?” in the abstract, but grounded observations about how your skin behaves in real situations. How does it feel an hour after washing your face without any products? Do you break out after trying new skincare? Does your skin flush easily in heat? How does it look in photographs — dull, shiny, or somewhere between?

I took it expecting to confirm what I already thought I knew about my skin. Some of the results surprised me.

My result: DRNW — Dry, Resistant, Non-pigmented, Wrinkle-prone.

Dry and Wrinkle-prone felt accurate — I have always needed rich moisturisers and have focused on anti-ageing actives for years. Non-pigmented was reassuring — I have even skin tone and minimal sun damage, which I attribute partly to consistent SPF use since my thirties.

Resistant was the surprise. The quiz classifies skin as resistant when it is unlikely to react to products — low sensitivity, good barrier function, tolerant of actives. I had always described my skin as slightly sensitive because it occasionally feels tight and dry, but the quiz correctly identified that tightness and dryness as a moisture barrier issue, not an inflammatory sensitivity. This distinction matters enormously for choosing products — sensitive skin and dry skin need very different formulations.

The DRNW Routine — What the System Prescribed

The quiz generated a personalised routine with specific product recommendations for each step. For DRNW skin, the priorities are: repairing and maintaining the moisture barrier, maximising anti-ageing actives (which resistant skin can tolerate at higher concentrations than sensitive skin), and protecting against the collagen loss that wrinkle-prone skin is prone to.

Morning routine:

Step 1 — Essopi Glycolic 10% Moisturizing Cleanser ($44) A low-pH cleanser with glycolic acid, bisabolol, and green tea extract. The glycolic acid exfoliates gently and increases the absorption of everything that follows — for DRNW skin, which tends toward dullness and flakiness, this is the foundation step. I use it morning and evening.

Step 2 — Zerafite Wrinkle Defense Barrier Cream ($70) A moisturiser formulated with ceramides, fatty acids, and barrier-repair ingredients alongside anti-ageing actives. For DRNW skin, this step does double duty — it repairs the moisture barrier that dry skin constantly needs to rebuild while delivering anti-ageing benefits.

The texture is richer than most moisturisers I have used, which initially felt like too much for daytime, but my skin absorbed it completely within minutes.

Step 3 — EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 ($45) The sunscreen step. EltaMD UV Clear contains hyaluronic acid and niacinamide — it layers smoothly over the Zerafite without pilling, which had been a problem with previous SPF products I had tried over richer moisturisers.

For DRNW skin, the moisturising formulation is specifically appropriate — mattifying SPFs designed for oily skin sit wrongly on dry skin and emphasise texture.

Evening routine:

Step 1 — Essopi Glycolic 10% Cleanser (same as morning)

Step 2 — SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic Antioxidant Serum ($185) The antioxidant step in the evening routine. I had been using vitamin C in the morning — the standard recommendation — but Dr. Baumann’s protocol for DRNW places the CE Ferulic in the evening because resistant skin can layer it with the retinol that follows without the irritation this combination would cause on sensitive skin.

For those who want more on vitamin C serums generally, I have compared the main options in my vitamin C serum guide for mature skin.

Step 3 — SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0 The retinol step. 1.0% is a high concentration — one that sensitive skin would not tolerate. The Resistant classification in DRNW is what makes this appropriate: resistant skin can handle higher actives without the redness, flaking, or inflammation that would stop a sensitive-skin person from using retinol at this strength.

I started on alternate evenings and moved to nightly use after two weeks without any irritation. For more on retinol for mature skin, I have covered the key options in my best retinol for mature skin guide.

My Results After a Few Weeks

I want to be honest about timescales here: a few weeks is enough to see early changes, not transformation. Skincare actives — particularly retinol and vitamin C — work on collagen and cell turnover cycles that take months to show their full results. What I can report accurately is what has changed in the short term.

The most immediate change: texture. Within the first week, the slight flakiness I had accepted as normal around my nose and forehead was gone. The Essopi cleanser’s glycolic acid and the Zerafite’s barrier-repair ingredients together addressed this faster than I expected.

Brightness. By the end of the second week my skin looked visibly more luminous — not glowing in an obvious way, but the dullness that I had attributed to age and tiredness had reduced noticeably. My partner noticed without being prompted, which is the most reliable test I know.

Hydration. The Zerafite is noticeably more effective at keeping my skin comfortable throughout the day than the moisturisers I had been using previously. By 5pm my skin still feels supple rather than tight — a difference I can feel reliably.

Fine lines. Too early for any meaningful change here. Retinol effects on wrinkle depth take 12+ weeks of consistent use to become measurable. I will update this post as I continue.

The full routine costs $344 at full price. With code NOTIMEFORSTYLE10 at skintypesolutions.com, that comes down by $34 — not dramatic, but meaningful on a routine you will be repurchasing regularly.

Is the Baumann Skin Type Quiz Worth It?

For anyone who has been using skincare products that feel approximately right but are not producing the results they should — yes, without hesitation.

The quiz is free. The routine it recommends is built from clinical evidence rather than marketing or trend. And the Resistant classification — which most beauty content ignores entirely — changes which products are appropriate in ways that matter significantly for mature skin.

The thing I found most useful was not the product list itself but the logic behind it. Understanding why DRNW skin needs a barrier-repair moisturiser rather than a lightweight gel, why it can tolerate 1.0% retinol without building up slowly, why the glycolic cleanser is the foundation rather than an occasional treatment — that framework lets you make better skincare decisions beyond this specific routine.

Yes — completely free on skintypesolutions.com. No email address required to take it or receive your results.

How long does the quiz take?

3-5 minutes. The questions are straightforward and based on observable skin behaviours rather than complex self-assessment.

What are the 16 Baumann Skin Types?

Each type is a four-letter combination of Dry/Oily, Sensitive/Resistant, Pigmented/Non-pigmented, and Wrinkle-prone/Tight. Common types include DRNW, DSPT, ORNT, OSPW, and 12 others.

Is Skin Type Solutions only for American customers?

The site ships primarily to the US and Canada, and the brand is US-focused. International customers should check shipping availability at checkout.

Can my Baumann Skin Type change over time?

Yes — hormonal changes, menopause, age, and environment can shift your type. Dr. Baumann recommends retaking the quiz every few years or after any significant hormonal change. For women over 50, the shift from pre- to post-menopause often moves skin from oily to dry and from tight to wrinkle-prone.
