CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket Review: Is It Worth It?

At 59, I’ve tried a lot of wellness devices that promised more than they delivered. And the CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket is not one of them — but you need to know why it works before you spend the money.

The short version: this is a genuinely effective recovery and sleep tool, especially for women in perimenopause and menopause. The cortisol-lowering, sleep-improving, joint-soothing effects are real and documented.

I’ve been using mine as part of my weekly routine for over a year. Here’s my honest review.

What is the CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket?

Unlike a traditional sauna that heats the air around you, an infrared sauna blanket uses far-infrared wavelengths (4–16 microns) to warm your body directly from the inside out. The CurrentBody version heats to a maximum of 75°C, with a session range of 30 to 60 minutes.

The practical result: you sweat deeply at a far lower ambient temperature than a traditional sauna, which makes it accessible at home and considerably more comfortable for women who run hot — a common reality in perimenopause.

Why this matters specifically if you’re over 50

This is the section that’s missing from almost every other review, so I’m going to be direct about it.

Menopausal and perimenopausal women have specific reasons to be interested in regular heat therapy — and specific reasons to approach it carefully.

The benefits that are actually backed by research include:

Cortisol reduction.

Elevated cortisol is a major driver of weight gain around the midsection, disrupted sleep, and mood instability in perimenopause. Regular heat therapy has been shown to lower cortisol levels — and the effect on my sleep and morning mood has been the most consistent thing I’ve noticed with weekly use.

Improved sleep quality.

The mechanism here is interesting: as your core body temperature rises during a session and then drops sharply afterward, your brain reads that drop as a sleep cue. For women dealing with night sweats and broken sleep in menopause, using the blanket on low heat (45–50°C) two to three hours before bed can meaningfully improve sleep onset. This has been one of the most reliable effects for me.

Joint and muscle recovery.

Post-menopausal bone density changes, combined with the muscle loss (sarcopenia) that accelerates after 50, mean recovery from exercise takes longer. The improved circulation and heat-induced muscle relaxation from a 35-minute session after weight training is real — I notice less stiffness the following morning.

Mood.

Heat therapy triggers endorphin release. After a session, I consistently feel calmer and more focused than before. Studies on heat therapy and depression are small but promising.

What it won’t do: eliminate toxins (your liver and kidneys do that), burn 600 calories per hour, or replace a consistent sleep and exercise routine. Think of it as a recovery accelerant, not a shortcut.

What’s in the box

  • The infrared sauna blanket (180cm × 180cm)
  • A 100% cotton towel insert — this is the detail that separates the CurrentBody version from cheaper alternatives
  • A foam head pillow
  • Temperature and timer controller
  • Storage bag

The towel insert absorbs sweat during the session, protects the inside of the blanket, and makes the whole thing feel considerably less like a plastic bag and more like a considered wellness product.

One honest note on storage: the blanket weighs 7.5kg and the box it comes in is large. If you live in a smaller home, think about where it’s going to live. I kept the original box rather than trying to stuff it back into the carry bag.

How I actually use it: my weekly routine

CurrentBody recommends three sessions per week, 40–60 minutes each. That’s the rhythm I’ve settled into, and I use it two different ways depending on my goal.

For post-workout recovery (after weight training): 65–70°C, 30–35 minutes. The heat increases circulation to muscles, which supports repair and reduces the stiffness that, at 59, I feel much more acutely than I did at 40. I follow this with a cold shower — the contrast is intense but the results the next day are noticeable.

For sleep and stress relief (evening use): 45–50°C, 45–50 minutes, two to three hours before bed. Lower heat, longer session. The body temperature drop afterward triggers that sleep cue I mentioned. On these evenings, I fall asleep faster and wake up less — consistently.

Step-by-step:

  1. Place the cotton towel insert inside the blanket on a flat surface (bed or floor)
  2. Drink 200–300ml of water before you start
  3. Set your temperature and timer (default 45 minutes)
  4. Lie down, zip up, and do nothing for 45 minutes — this is harder than it sounds
  5. Rehydrate well afterward

For your first session: start at the lowest setting (30°C) and build up gradually over several sessions. The heat is more intense than it looks on paper.

The benefits I’ve actually experienced — vs the marketing claims

I want to separate what I’ve genuinely noticed from what CurrentBody says on the box, because the gap is significant in some areas.

Real and consistent:

  • Faster sleep onset on evenings after a low-heat session
  • Noticeably less muscle stiffness the day after weight training
  • A sustained sense of calm for several hours after a session — this is the cortisol effect in action
  • Improved mood and mental clarity, particularly the morning after an evening session

Not something I can verify:

  • The “600 calories per hour” figure — no independent study supports this at the level claimed
  • “Toxin elimination” — your liver and kidneys do this, not a blanket
  • Dramatic weight loss — if you’re retaining water, you’ll lose water weight temporarily; beyond that, don’t count on it

This matters especially after 50, when marketing promises around weight loss and detox can feel particularly appealing — and particularly misleading. The honest case for this blanket is recovery, sleep, stress, and mood. Those are real. They’re also, frankly, exactly what most of us need.

The Dermalux Flex MD + Sauna Bundle: is it worth upgrading?

If you’re already considering the Dermalux Flex MD — which I use and would rank among the best LED devices available for home use over 50 — the bundle combines both devices at a significant saving compared to buying separately.

The Dermalux Flex MD uses clinical-grade LED wavelengths (red, near-infrared, and blue) across a panel large enough to treat the face, neck, and décolleté simultaneously. Combined with the sauna blanket, you have a morning/evening protocol that covers both skin quality and body recovery — which is exactly how I use both.

How this fits with my full CurrentBody routine

I use the sauna blanket and the CurrentBody LED mask in the same week but on different days. The LED mask (10 minutes, three to four times a week, morning) works at the cellular level on skin quality — collagen production, inflammation reduction, pigmentation. The sauna blanket (three times a week, evening) works on systemic recovery and sleep. They don’t overlap; they complement.

If you’re new to CurrentBody and the sauna blanket would be your first purchase, start there. If you’re already using the LED mask and sleeping well, the blanket is the logical next addition for body recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket actually work? Yes — for the benefits supported by research: better sleep, stress and cortisol reduction, post-workout recovery, and mood improvement. The 600-calorie-per-hour burn and detox claims are not backed by independent studies.

Is the infrared sauna blanket good for menopause symptoms? It can genuinely help with several of the most disruptive menopausal symptoms: disrupted sleep, elevated cortisol and stress, joint pain, and mood instability. Used on low heat in the evening, it supports sleep onset. Regular use has had a consistent effect on my morning mood and stress levels. It won’t address hot flashes (heat would make them worse in the moment) — on hot flash days, skip the session or use a very low temperature.

How often should I use it? CurrentBody recommends three times a week for 40–60 minutes per session. That’s the frequency I’ve maintained, and it’s sustainable long-term. Daily use is not recommended — your body needs recovery time between sessions.

What temperature should I start at? Always start at the lowest setting (30°C) and build up over several sessions. The heat is more intense than it appears at higher settings, and acclimating gradually reduces the risk of feeling dizzy or overheated.

How does it compare to HigherDose? Both are strong products. The CurrentBody version has a slightly wider temperature range and includes the cotton towel insert in the box. HigherDose adds crystals and charcoal, which have marketing appeal but limited scientific evidence. The CurrentBody blanket is generally priced slightly lower. For a straightforward heat therapy device without the wellness-marketing add-ons, I prefer the CurrentBody.

Is it safe to use if I take medication for menopause or blood pressure? Check with your doctor first. Medications that affect blood pressure, circulation, or heat tolerance (including some HRT formulations) can interact with heat therapy. This is standard precaution, not a dealbreaker — most women taking HRT can use a sauna blanket safely, but confirmation from your GP is worth the five-minute call.

Does the NOTIME discount code work on the sauna blanket? Yes. It’s applied automatically when you shop via my affiliate links — no need to copy and paste. The code gives you 10% off the sauna blanket.

Can I use the sauna blanket if I have osteoporosis? The sauna blanket is generally considered safe for women with osteoporosis — there’s no impact or joint loading involved. That said, if you have significant cardiovascular involvement or take specific medications, confirm with your doctor before starting.
