You don’t need a completely new wardrobe for fall. Sometimes, the right shoes are enough to make everything you already own look fresh again.
After coming back from my vacation in Greece, I started looking at my wardrobe with fresh eyes—and, inevitably, thinking about fall.
What will I actually wear? What still feels current? And what could make the clothes I already own feel more polished, modern and intentional?
My answer, as so often, starts with shoes.
You don’t need ten new pairs. For fall 2026, I think three well-chosen styles can do most of the work—plus one wildcard for those days when you want your outfit to say a little more.
And yes: these styles are already everywhere in Milan.
1. Trendy sneakers that instantly modernize an outfit

Shop the New Balance 327 sneakers
These are the ones I own myself, and they are probably the pair I would recommend first.
The New Balance 327 has that perfect retro-inspired shape: sporty, but not too athletic; fashionable, but still incredibly easy to wear.
They’re ideal with:
- straight-leg or wide-leg jeans;
- tailored trousers;
- midi skirts;
- relaxed blazers.
A modern sneaker is, in my opinion, one of the easiest ways to make a wardrobe feel more current—especially if you’re over 50 and don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard.
The trick is choosing a silhouette with personality rather than a generic running shoe.
2. A great pair of Chelsea boots
Shop the Sam Edelman Laguna Chelsea boots
If I were buying just one practical boot for fall, I would strongly consider a Chelsea boot with a modern lug sole.
The Sam Edelman Laguna strikes a particularly good balance between classic and current. The chunky sole gives it a contemporary edge, while the clean Chelsea silhouette means it won’t feel dated next season.
Wear them with jeans, knit dresses, midi skirts or relaxed trousers.
This is the kind of shoe that quietly earns its place in your wardrobe because you keep reaching for it.

3. The elevated ankle boot that makes everything look more polished

Shop the versatile elevated bootie
Then there is the shoe I reach for when sneakers or flat boots feel a little too casual: a sleek ankle boot with a walkable heel.
This is one of the most versatile shoes you can own for fall. It instantly elevates denim, works beautifully with trousers and gives dresses a more sophisticated finish.
My advice is simple: choose a streamlined shape, a comfortable heel and a colour that works with most of your wardrobe.
Brown suede, by the way, is looking particularly chic for fall 2026.

The wildcard: leopard print shoes 🐆
Shop the Anne Klein leopard pumps
Leopard print is having another major fashion moment—but here’s why I still consider it a worthwhile addition to a wardrobe: it has never really disappeared.
Used well, leopard works almost like a neutral.
Try it with black, cream, camel, chocolate brown or denim. A single leopard-print shoe can transform the simplest outfit without requiring you to buy anything else.
And these pumps are particularly interesting because the block heel keeps the look elegant while remaining more practical than a traditional stiletto.
My fall 2026 shoe strategy
My wardrobe is increasingly about buying less, but choosing more strategically.
For fall, I would start with:
- A fashionable sneaker for everyday outfits.
- A quality Chelsea boot for practicality and edge.
- An elevated ankle boot for a more polished look.
Then, if you feel like having a little fun?
Add the leopard. 🐆
Because sometimes, the easiest way to refresh your wardrobe isn’t buying more clothes.
It’s simply putting on better shoes.
